Fashion Trend of Bollywood Salwar Kameez
50s – 60s era – The fashion then was for women in saris to wear brightly colored and patterned Salwar Kameez. The materials tended to be cotton or silk, not much synthetic material around. Kameez with sleeves up to the elbow, frills were fairly common. Basket or nest like hairstyle or a big hair bun was very common in the name of fashion. Clothes were according to the weather -i.e. cardigans/shawls/sweaters etc were worn on salwar suits in cold weather. Dupatta was used to cover the entire chest and shoulders.Traditional bindis were fashion statement in actresses like Madhu Bala, Nutan, Meena Kumari.
70s era – Bollywood modernization started. Tight pants with fitted kameez came in fashion. Round neck in salwar kameez were in fashion with some Costume Jewelry. Lace at the borders and neckline were very common. Outer rollers or loose hair was fashion. Tight churidar-kurtas were stylish fashionable yet traditional. The kurtas were so tight that walking was a real challenge in them. They used to have back slit to make the walk comfortable. Simple sleeves with simple neckline were in demand. The sleeves were either ¾ or long. They were zipped at back or on side. Asha Parekh,Waheeda Rehman were the trend setters.
80s – Fashion changed and western culture started influencing the bollywood. Net style came in fashion. Bangs came into fashion for female hair. Kurta Churidar came in fashion. Loose and comfortable kurta with tight fit churidar became the latest trend. Bright colors were all over in the market. Costume jewelry, long earrings with pendant neck pieces came in fashion. Juhi Chawla, Sri Devi was the Diva queens and trend setters in bollywood.
90s: Anarkali and long kameez came into fashion Salwar kameez became trendier. Kameez with jacket was a unique style. Some even tried net jacket over the kameez. Kajol and Madhuri with her traditional Indian clothing made girl next door look popular.
2000s: Retro fastrend is backhion . Anarkali salwar suits are back in fashion. Tight suits with churidar or frock suits are party wear. Designers are experimenting with blouses and their designs. Most of the neck designs and kameez were influenced by western culture. Halter neck, noodle straps, backless blouses are in fashion. Eye catching necklines are latest trends in Bollywood. While their current crop of contemporary actresses like Katrina Kaif, Rani, Aishwarya, Sonam Kapoor, Lara Dutta,Priyanka, and Bipasha Basu.
